Summer 2021 Broken Bow Getaway

It's time to catch up and clean some pictures off my phone. Looks like I left off at the end of summer just before our planned, long weekend getaway after all the summer intensives and  Junior Olympics - phew!

Our family loves, LOVES Broken Bow, OK. Not for the casinos (clearly suck at it), but we love to relax in their beautiful cabins and enjoy all the amenities they provide. We stayed at a cabin located near a river complete with 8 kayaks for rafting. Perfect - or so we thought. After enjoying some hiking, swimming in the river, and hanging out watching movies, it was time to kayak down the river which is ~ 8 miles to the get-off point viewed from the highway should only be 3 hours depending on how fast the river was flowing. Well, little did I know the river winds back and forth the whole eight miles, therefore, it was ALOT longer than expected. There were no get-off points sooner and there were ~ 30ft cliffs on either side. I'm towing 5 teens and an aussie (first time to swim -ever) along this long river path. Though the scenery was breathtaking, there are only so many waterfalls and rapids until the excitement wore off and tiredness set in. Now these waterfalls were only 4ft high at the tallest but navigating through the rocks took some skill that we amateurs lacked. Finally, after 6 hours we made it to the planned get-off point where Matt was ready to call a search party for us. Despite reapplying sunscreen, sitting in a kayak for 6 hours with moving water constantly splashing and washing away the attempt left us with severe sunburns. Mostly on me. Thank goodness the kids were mostly ok. Yikes - never doing that again.

That evening after a long shower and rest, we went out to eat at Grateful Head Pizzaria. I might have had a couple of celebratory drinks.

The rest of the trip was uneventful as we were all super sunburned. I actually had to call off work for a week due to severe swelling and unable to stand without excruciating pain.

So much for adventure - it is definitely overrated.
